Gallery overview
Founded in 1967, Whitestone Gallery is one of a small number of pioneering galleries in Japan. Until the 1980s the gallery focused mostly on European Post-Impressionist and modern paintings. The focus then shifted gradually to Japanese modern and contemporary art, and recently Japanese avant-garde movements such as the 1950s Gutai Group. Exhibitions are held at the main gallery space in the Ginza, Tokyo and in the Karuizawa New Art Museum-Whitestone Art Foundation. The gallery participates in international art fairs worldwide, presenting works ranging from Impressionist masterpieces to contemporary Japanese art. Whitestone gallery opened a gallery in Hong Kong in 2015.
